This September, the inaugural TomcatCon was launched in London; the first of a series of community events to be held in Europe, dedicated to Apache Tomcat.
This all-day conference featured talks presented by key Tomcat committers from Red Hat and Pivotal, and c2b2 were privileged to be able to sponsor these fantastic speakers, to help with travel expenses and other costs. As part of our sponsorship, we also ran a ticket-giveaway competition, and our two ticket winners, Camden & Richmond, attended the event alongside one of our principal consultants, Brian.
The day’s programme began with Mark Thomas of Pivotal, the conference organiser and Tomcat committer. His presentation “State of the Cat” got us caught up to date, with a review of the last year plus plans for the future. The next session, addressing new and upcoming features in Tomcat, was presented by Remy Maucherat, Principal Software Engineer for Red Hat.
After another informative session with Mark, who addressed how you can configure Tomcat for Reverse Proxies, Load Balancing and Clustering, the final presentation was given by Jean-Frederic Clere; a Software Engineering Manager with Red Hat. This demonstration helped illustrate how a Tomcat Cluster could move into a cloud deployment. If you want to try this yourself, Jean-Frederic has a tutorial available here.
The first ever TomcatCon was a definite success, with a great turnout and positive feedback from those who attended. We at c2b2 are looking forward to the next TomcatCon, which is likely to be in mainland Europe, and hope to see you there!
Feedback from our Ticket Winners:
"It was a very interesting day, and hearing directly from some of the project's major committers gave a fascinating insight into Tomcat. I've taken away a number of ideas for how we can improve the way we use Tomcat and I have a renewed confidence in it as a platform."
Camden Reeve, Technical Architect
“TomcatCon was an excellent event, the event’s content was delivered by knowledgeable speakers who made the session as interactive as possible. I particularly enjoyed security and load balancing topics. A big thank you to the speakers and C2B2 for making it possible for me to attend such an event”
Richmond Boateng, Lead Middleware Admin
